With International Women's Day fast approaching, it's important to take a moment to reflect on the advances made by social movements, and more specifically feminist movements such as #metoo.
Thanks to Harvey Weinstein's conviction announced on Monday February 24, the #metoo movement has scored a victory in their fight against violence against women! This movement has given young women the courage to speak out about the violence they have experienced, and has helped to secure Harvey Weinstein's conviction. The Green Party of Quebec would like to salute the courage of these women who dared to speak out in defense of their rights. The right of women to dispose of their bodies as they see fit, which has been won at the cost of much suffering and is still very fragile.
This struggle concerns us all. We need only think back to the events of recent weeks in Quebec: the baton attacks on young women, the murders of several women including Marylène Lévesque, and more... As a society, we must overturn the macho ideals that oppress women and girls! It is then the duty of all of us to encourage the participation of women in all spheres of our society, be it political, economic, social or cultural. We need to ensure a global understanding of consent, to ensure a safe environment for all these women. We need to put all our efforts into fighting sexism, which is still far too prevalent in our institutions. Together, let's say NO to sexism, NO to violence against women, NO to rape culture!
