On Friday, December 19, 2014 at 5:45 p.m., I witnessed this muscular arrest by STM security guards at the Vendôme metro station.

The video begins at the moment I entered the station, so I did not witness what provoked this intervention. However, several people at the scene have maintained that it all started when the security guards approached a man (other than the victim) who was playing his guitar illegally inside the station.

The second man (the victim) was chatting with the musician when the officers intervened. According to witnesses, the musician did not immediately respond to the security officers’ requests, and the victim of the arrest verbally opposed their requests. He was eating a sandwich, and when a tomato fell on the floor, the officers pinned him down and told him that he had interfered with the cleanliness of the subway.

The victim’s words during the arrest confirm what the witnesses later proclaimed. We clearly hear the victim say many times that he did nothing wrong, and that he was just eating his sandwich. He does not seem to understand the cause of the arrest or why excessive force was used against him.

When he asked for the reason for the arrest, the officers replied at 3:30 “for refusing to check”.

Last Friday, I filmed a violent arrest by STM officers at the Vendôme station. The video was viewed more than 35,000 times on YouTube in 3 days. The STM has now opened an investigation into the incident.

The opening of an internal investigation shows that I am not alone in wondering about this muscular intervention. We must also ask ourselves whether STM inspectors are adequately trained to carry out such an intervention in the métro system.

The inspectors only receive 10 weeks of training at the National Police Academy to do a job that is close to that of real police officers.

Here are a few articles on the incident:
