Just returned from the Saint-Laurent municipal council meeting where several environmental groups including the Sierra Club and the Green Coalition gathered to ask questions and pressure Mayor Alain Desousa to protect the TechnoPark wetland, home to several endangered species.

In early August, Elizabeth May and I called on the federal minister of the environment Catherine McKenna to utilize federal endangered species legislation to protect this area.

Construction is set to begin this week. Tonight I asked Mayor Desousa why his administration is so determined to go ahead with this construction project before the federal minister of the environment’s decision has been rendered.

Unfortunately, Mayor Desousa’s response was unsatisfactory. He explained that, for him, avoiding delays in the construction projects was more important than protecting endangered species.

The Green Party of Québec will continue taking action and speaking out to protect endangered species in the Saint-Laurent Technoparc and beyond.

In solidarity,

Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Québec
