On Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm, Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec, was accompanied by Halimatou Bah, deputy leader of the Green Party of Quebec, in Longueuil, to advocate for the protection of western chorus frogs. The Western Chorus Frog is a frog that is endangered in Quebec due to real estate development, which is why Alex Tyrrell advocated for its protection on Saturday, April 2, 2022.

Alex Tyrrell is an eco-socialist activist who was elected leader of the Green Party of Quebec in 2013 at the age of 25. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Concordia University as well as a college diploma from Dawson College in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Under his leadership, the Green Party of Quebec has positioned itself on the left of the Quebec political scene, while adopting a comprehensive program for Quebec, the new Green Plan, which contains progressive proposals on all issues of Quebec politics.

The leader of the Green Party of Quebec deplores the lack of action taken by the provincial government « In 2021, I organized a demonstration in front of the office of the Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of the Environment. It was on Ile Perrot. We were protesting against the real estate development in this area which had huge impacts on the habitat of this same species. Here, in Longueuil, the situation is just as disastrous, if not worse. For years, the federal and provincial governments have refused to act, » says Alex Tyrrell.

« Once an endangered population disappears under the bulldozers of developers, it is almost impossible to re-establish it. This is a sensitive species that has almost no habitat left. The city of Longueuil has not been of much help. They placed their snow dump right next to the forest and let the dirty water flow into the habitat. This is a problem of urban sprawl, greed, special interests and a total disregard for biodiversity, » said Alex Tyrrell.

Finally, he assured that « a Green Party government would stop the destruction of wetlands and critical habitat for threatened populations. We need concrete action now, not after these wetlands have been further drained to make way for overpriced condos, developer profits and petty taxes for the municipality. Let’s act now before it’s too late for these western chorus frog populations. »

He finished by reminding us that a vote for the Green Party of Quebec is « a vote to protect the environment, to limit urban sprawl, to conserve biodiversity and to oppose special interests. We need your support. The environment needs your support. Vote for the Green Party of Quebec on April 11.
