The leader of the Green Party of Quebec, Alex Tyrrell, spoke this Monday in the municipality of Saint-Jérôme, to present the candidacy of Marcella Bustamante, official candidate of the Green Party for the 2022 provincial elections, in the riding of Saint-Jérôme. Together, they took a public stand on a very important issue at the provincial level, namely the whole question of the lack of space in daycares. According to the Ministère de la Famille, as of May 31, more than 33,829 children were waiting for an immediate space. It is high time to act to protect these institutions that are essential to Quebec. The Green Party of Quebec supports the idea of a massive reinvestment in the public child care system.
During this speech, the leader of the Green Party, Alex Tyrrell, took a position on the party’s demands regarding the lack of space in child care centres. The accessibility of quality daycare services is a priority for the Green Party. The GPQ believes that it is high time to act to protect these institutions that are essential to Quebec. The Green Party of Quebec supports the idea of a massive reinvestment in the public child care system. In addition to providing equal opportunity, daycare centers have given thousands of women access to the job market, stimulating the economy. According to the most recent estimates, the CPEs have given 70,000 women access to employment, adding $5 billion to the GDP. “We want to eliminate waiting lists. This is an issue of social justice, given that many parents and many women are deprived of access to the labour market, which also reinforces the issue of labour shortage that we are experiencing in Quebec. The GPQ would like to have low-cost subsidized daycare. This is a way of valuing their work and allowing people to get back into the labour market more quickly. This is one of the main commitments of the Green Party of Quebec on family issues in this election,” said Alex Tyrrell, party leader.
To achieve this, the GPQ proposes to increase salaries. This measure would allow for the revaluation of jobs in the CPE network, which is suffering from a lack of manpower. The party is also demanding an improvement in working conditions. Childcare workers are passionate about providing quality education to children throughout Quebec. This is why respect for seniority, the work week, the decision-making role of workers, access to leaves, progressive retirement and the splitting of leaves are all important elements.
