On march 14th, an event was held in Montreal by the “Mouvement québécois pour la paix” to support the Cuban people and collect funds. The event gathered militants, representatives of community organizations as well as many political personalities to affirm their concerns for the Cuban population amidst the current economical and humanitarian crisis in Cuba.
At this event, Alex Tyrrell, chief of the Green Party of Quebec, reiterated his support to the Cuban population and called for stronger international solidarity. He also met with the Cuban consul in Montreal, Angel Torres, with whom he talked about the many challenges faced by the island’s population.
In his intervention, Alex Tyrrell denounced the economical pressure put on Cuba, an act that he considers to be a major source of the lack of energy, food and medical equipment. He also mentioned that the decrease of international tourism-based income contributed to the worsening of the current crisis.
“THE POPULATION OF CUBA IS LIVING THROUGH AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT PERIOD. CANADA MUST PROVE THEIR SOLIDARITY BY DIRECTLY HELPING THE PEOPLE OF CUBA. WE MUST SEND HUMANITARIAN AID AND HELP CREATE INTERNATIONAL POLICIES THAT PROMOTE COOPERATION INSTEAD OF ISOLATION” DECLARED ALEX TYRRELL
The leader of the Green Party of Quebec also insisted on the importance of civic engagement and mobilization to help the populations of countries affected by such humanitarian crisis. He encouraged our province’s population to contribute to the multiple solidarity initiatives put in place by local community organisations.
The funds raised at this event will be used to send material goods to Cuba. For the Green Party of Quebec, this event shows the need to reinforce solidarity between our people and to promote solutions based on social justice, peace and international cooperation.
