Friday morning, Alex Tyrrell, the leader of the Green Party of Quebec, had the honor to visit the chinese embassy in Ottawa to take part in a roundtable discussion about how to improve the Canada-China relationship hosted by Lin Bin who is Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy.
Over several hours they discussed the progress made since Mark Carney’s visit to China, the upcoming arrival of Chinese electric vehicles to Canada, progress China has made in eliminating extreme poverty, economic growth and the energy transition.
The Lin Bin asked the round table what could be done to improve this friendship. The Green Party’s suggestion, from an environmentalist perspective was for them to explain to Canadians how China can help Canada achieve our GHG reduction targets.
China has transitioned away from fossil fuels faster than any other country. They have cleared the pollution from their urban air, revitalized and reconstructed ecosystems and built massive public transit across the entire country. How can China help Canada achieve similar objectives?
The discussion touched on many other important issues like China’s support for world peace, religious freedom, their opening of China to Canadian tourists without visa requirements and increasing academic and cultural exchanges.
“I am happy to be able to contribute to friendship between our countries and by extension the increased environmental, social and economic progress both countries can accelerate by working together.”, says Alex Tyrrell.
