In Sherbrooke, almost 400 people were present for 3 days at the “Sommet National du Droit à l’Alimentation. People involved in soup kitchens, agricultural producers, community organisations, researchers, experts and people who came to learn and fight for this human right were present at this summit.
Alex Tyrrell got the opportunity to speak at this event. In his speech, he highlighted the 4 main commitments of the Green Party of Quebec on the right to food :
- 1) Put in place a government run system of public grocery stores that will help to reduce the price of groceries, to offer a healthy diet and to break the private monopoly on food.
- 2) Add the right to healthy food to Quebec’s Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.
- 3) Make food waste illegal by forcing grocery stores to give end of life food for free at the front of stores.
- 4) Fight against over-packaging by implementing a mandatory reusable container program for food.
