On may 4th, Carney’s liberal government announced another injection of funds into the war in Ukraine. 270 million dollars of tax payer money will go towards this war, only adding to the huge amount of money sent to Ukraine.

Over the past 4.5 years, Canada has sent over $25 billion to Ukraine in order to perpetuate and continue an unwinnable, unnecessary, and unjustified war. Canada has sent these funds without oversight while simultaneously advocating against peace talks, disavowing any negotiations that could lead to a lasting peace, and vilifying Russia through any means available.

That works out to $645 for every person living in Canada. If you pay taxes, your share is higher. That is not counting the additional thousands per person for Canada’s own military spending and expansion plans. Canada has also invested millions to “counter Russian disinformation,” in other words, anything that contradicts the Canadian government / NATO narrative and version of events, which is essentially: “We are right about everything, and anyone who questions our actions is Russian disinformation.”

Last week, a Senate committee put out a report about supposed Russian interference (which they could not prove). The report calls on the Canadian government to utilize AI to respond to “Russian disinformation.” Ironically, that is precisely what the Senate report accuses Russia of doing.

Over the past few weeks, the Canadian government has begun using AI-generated propaganda images to level accusations against Russia. The protagonist in these images is always a man in a suit with the colours of the Russian flag across where his face should be. This use of AI and state-sponsored online vilification of designated enemies raises profound questions.

Canada needs to wake up and stop propagandizing our own citizens in order to extort our tax dollars to feed the war machine. The only way to have peace in Ukraine is through a ceasefire and a lasting peace deal that takes into account the reality of the situation on the ground. Canada and Russia would both be better off with positive relations between our two countries. Canada needs to develop its own foreign policy, cancel military spending, and invest in world peace.
