Tina Jiuru Zhu is entering politics to advocate for justice, equality, and a more inclusive and sustainable society. Originally from Tianjin, China, she immigrated to Canada in 1998, drawn by its openness and opportunities. After initially settling in Toronto, she moved to Quebec with her family, where she found a cultural environment that resonated with her experiences in Europe and offered a higher quality of life. She is committed to representing the diverse communities of La Pinière and encouraging greater civic engagement, particularly among immigrant communities.
Tina holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, specializing in telecommunications systems within the computer science department. She then pursued a master’s degree in applied computer science at the Université libre de Bruxelles, graduating in 1998. She began her career in telecommunications before transitioning to web development after moving to Canada. Following several years in the technology sector, she founded her own import-export business. In 2011, she became an interior designer after training at the Centre de formation de Lachine and subsequently opened her own boutique in Ville-Émard. She also became a real estate agent in 2019, gaining firsthand experience of the housing challenges faced by many residents.
Deeply involved in her community, Tina founded the Canada-China Friendship Association in 2018, which was officially registered as a non-profit organization in 2021. Through this work, she fostered cultural exchange and supported community initiatives. She was also active in political and social movements, notably to combat discrimination against the Chinese community and to promote peace. In 2024, she ran as an independent candidate in a Verdun by-election, where she distinguished herself through her anti-war stance and her opposition to violence and conflict.
Tina chose to run with the Green Party of Quebec because of its strong commitment to environmental protection, social justice, and peace. She believes that economic development and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand when approached thoughtfully. She is particularly concerned about the rising cost of living, noting that many people work hard but still struggle to find adequate housing or meet their basic needs. She also emphasizes the importance of building a society free from racism and discrimination, where everyone is treated equally.
At the local level, Tina wants to increase political participation within La Pinière’s diverse communities, particularly its large Chinese population, and ensure that all voices are heard. She advocates for better access to affordable housing, a cleaner environment, and policies that support families and workers.
In her free time, Tina enjoys writing and has published two collections of traditional Chinese poetry, with a third currently in preparation. She also participates in sports, including dragon boat racing in Ville-Émard, and performs traditional Chinese dance and song as a member of the Canada-China Artistic Troupe.
