Monday, June 1st – Mark Carney anounces the Combatting Hate Act that will focus on the rise of antisemitism. The problem is, this speech was delivered in front of an Israeli flag.
Denouncing heinous acts such as antisemitism is a very positive thing, and we need Canada’s and Quebec’s leaders to continue to do so. But, by standing in front of Israel’s flag, Mark Carney associates antisemitism to anti-zionism, a very dangerous thing to do while the IOF is commiting a genocide on the Palestinian people.
“In the middle of a live streamed genocide the Canadian Prime Minister is making speeches in front of an Israeli flag, telling us that the real victims are those who’s feelings are hurt by criticism of the offending state.” states Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec, on social media.
Antisemitism is a very real problem that affects the marginalized Jewish people in Canada. On the other hand, associating these heinous acts with valid criticisms of a genocidal state is wrong and dangerous. Mark Carney is doing free propaganda for the state of Israel and justifies their genocide by equaling it to combatting antisemitism.
