Friday, June 12 – The SPVM intervened to dismantle a team of patrol officers in the borough of Montreal North who are accused of racism and hate crimes.
The director of the Montreal police service, Fady Dagher, shared his disappointment and sadness regarding the actions committed by his team in a press conference.
“I was very surprised. I didn’t think it was possible in 2026,” said Fady Dagher.
Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec, is calling for much more systemic consequences to address these repeated and coordinated behaviours.
“Their administrative reassignment and the disbanding of the team are not enough. Let’s take a moment to think about the potential victims of these officers. In light of the circumstances, I am asking Christine Fréchette to launch a commission on racism within the SPVM.” – Alex Tyrrell, via his social media
These 16 police officers are not the first to be accused of racist and hateful acts. And without systemic change, they will not be the last ones either. To address this real problem, much broader changes must be made to Quebec’s policing system. The Green Party of Quebec, is therefore, planning to impose much broader reforms to Quebec’s police system and change it in a way that truly prevents such acts from being commited ever again.
