(Lévis) - Tuesday, September 23, 2014

The Green Party of Quebec is proud to announce the candidacy of Mr. Alex Tyrrell in the October 20, 2014 by-election.

Mr. Tyrrell was elected leader of the PVQ on September 21, 2013. Aged 26, he is a part-time environmental science student at Concordia University. Mr. Tyrrell hopes to make the arrival of tar sands oil at the Lévis refinery a key issue in the election campaign.

"The people of Levis will have to face many environmental challenges in the coming years. The arrival of heavy oil from the tar sands represents an enormous risk to the health of the local population and to the region's ecosystems," declared Mr. Tyrrell.

"We vigorously oppose Bill 3 on municipal employee pension plans. In 2012, Quebec students were facing abusive austerity measures. Today it's our municipal employees who are the government's target."

Mr. Tyrrell is the first Green Party candidate to run in Lévis since the 2007 general election. "We are in the process of building a political party on a national scale. This election will enable us to get to know the people of Lévis and build a local base," concluded Mr. Tyrrell.

Mr. Tyrrell is also the first candidate to file his candidacy with the Chief Electoral Officer, and many signs are already posted in the riding.
