On Thursday, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard made inappropriate comments towards the Muslim community following a tragic act of violence in which a Quebecker stabbed an American police officer in Michigan.

Following the attack, Mr. Couillard stated that all Muslims have a responsibility to condemn and prevent terrorist acts. Every member of society has a responsibility to prevent and condemn violent acts. This voluntary association of Islam and terrorism is unacceptable and merits a sincere apology from the premier.

Philippe Couillard's comments have contributed to stigmatization of the Muslim community. They were inappropriate and opportunistic. By making this type of declaration M. Couillard has shown us that his openness towards minority communities is flexible depending on the electoral circumstances and his political calculations. I invite Premier Couillard to apologize to the Muslim community as soon as possible.
