"The Prime Minister François Legault promises to introduce a mixed electoral system with regional compensation in time for the 2026 general election. However, he sets two conditions for proceeding: obtain the support of at least three of the four parties represented in the National Assembly, including the CAQ, and receive the green light from a majority of voters.
Quebecers will bring the debate to a close with a referendum to coincide with the next general election, scheduled for October 3, 2022, Mr. Legault decided, following heated discussions on the issue within his parliamentary group. "In a democracy, you can never go wrong when you consult the population," he said on Wednesday.
"If he had wanted to scuttle the project, he wouldn't have acted otherwise," said PQ elected representative Harold LeBel after reading the bill establishing a new voting system.
