Earlier this week, I visited Réserve faunique de La Vérendrye, where aboriginal communities have set up checkpoints in preparation for a five-year moratorium on non-aboriginal moose hunting.
Despite the fact that Ministry of Wildlife data shows a significant decline in the moose population on the reserve, the provincial government continues to issue sport hunting permits on aboriginal lands without community consent.
In this video, I chat with the Mitchikanibikok (Barriere Lake) Band Councillor and community member Shannon Chief.
The Green Party of Quebec fully supports the Anishinabe communities in their struggle to protect the moose population, their traditional way of life and their sovereignty.
In solidarity,
Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Quebec
