On Wednesday May 11 at 6:30 pm, Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec, visited Gatineau in the company of Rachid Jemmah, Green Party of Quebec candidate in the Hull riding. They visited the Hull riding to call for the extension of free public transit between Gatineau and Ottawa, and to launch Rachid Jemmah's campaign.
Alex Tyrrell is an eco-socialist activist elected leader of the Green Party of Quebec in 2013 at the age of 25. Under his leadership, the Quebec Green Party has positioned itself on the left of the Quebec political scene, while adopting a comprehensive program for Quebec, the new green plan, which contains progressive proposals on all issues of Quebec politics.
As for Rachid Jemmah, he is the manager of a restaurant chain and the father of two young children for whom he hopes to be able to offer them a viable planet. He is involved in politics to promote the environment, social justice and living together. He chose to run under the banner of the Green Party of Quebec because the party's main objectives - social justice and the fight against climate change - resonate deeply with him.
Party leader Alex Tyrrell said, "We're here today to launch Rachid's campaign by calling for the construction of a new underground transit system for the city of Gatineau. This city has been underserved by public transit for far too long. Successive governments have allowed construction efforts to be blocked by a bureaucracy driven by a lack of political will to protect the environment, to help people rely less on private cars, and by a lack of vision for the future."
Alex Tyrrell then added that "To those who might say that building underground transport systems in 2022 is too expensive, impossible or ambitious, I say this: look at the system Montreal was able to build five decades ago. Look at the new tunneling technologies available. Look at what Legault is proposing between Lévis and Quebec City. We're perfectly capable of building an underground transit system for Gatineau. The Green Party of Quebec will be the voice of this project in the next election."
Rachid Jemmah said: "Today, I join Alex Tyrrell here in taking a stand for the extension of Ottawa's underground transit system to Gatineau. Gatineau residents deserve accessible, free and efficient public transit. We must do better. We can do better! It's time for a truly green political change."
The leader of the Green Party of Quebec concluded that: "The Green Party of Quebec has the leadership we need to get public transit infrastructure built, and it is with great pleasure that I will now hand over the podium to our local candidate Rachid Jemmah, who will say a few words."
The Green Party of Quebec is ecosocial, feminist and inclusive.
