Exploration for shale gas is cancelled in New Brunswick until 2015, according to the company. Earlier this year, I visited the community of Elsipogtog to learn about the situation and to participate in their demonstration.

We have now reached a point in Canada where environmentally distructive projects in the name of economic growth are forced to be challenged and stopped by direct actions of First Nations and their supporters. The people who participated in this resistance are courageous activists who have agreed to take personal risks to protect the environment and the common good and they have my admiration.

Together we are able to stop projects that put the environment at risk. As politicians, our role is to ensure that this type of project does not go to the implementation phase in order to ensure that this type of conflict is not necessary to protect Mother Earth.

In solidarity with Elsipogtog,

Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Quebec
