The leader of the Green Party of Quebec, Alex Tyrrell, unveiled his first election commitment today: the introduction of free public transit. “We believe that this is a key measure that will allow us to fight climate change by reducing our oil consumption, and to solve the problem of traffic congestion in major centres by drastically reducing the number of cars on the road,” said the leader of the Quebec Greens and candidate in the riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
“In addition, this plan will stimulate the Quebec economy and create many quality jobs in a cutting-edge sector in which Quebec is already a leader. We have both the energy sources and the expertise to act much more aggressively in the development of public transit. It is our duty to develop them,” he added.
“The Parti Québécois transportation electrification strategy is all well and good in theory, but it contributes to the myth that private cars can be green. The real solution, from both an environmental and an economic standpoint, is to extend our public transit network across all regions and make it accessible to all citizens. No matter what their income or where they live. In this sense, it is also an issue of social justice,” he concluded.
The Green Party of Quebec also advocates an ambitious expansion of the public transit system, not only urban but also interurban and regional. This proposal will be detailed later in the campaign.
