At a time when the Government of Quebec should be taking action to protect its most vulnerable citizens and attacking tax havens, mining royalties and taxation of very high income earners, they are doing exactly the opposite.

Imposing austerity measures on people with disabilities while subsidizing the projects of their friends in the natural resources industry is unacceptable.

Let me point out one example.

Today, we learned that people with disabilities in Quebec City will face a 650% increase in paratransit fares. In addition, meal prices in day centres will increase by 87% as of next month.

Nothing forces us to cut essential services for people with disabilities.

If the Couillard government is unable to find the financial resources to provide an adequate quality of life for people with disabilities, it deserves to be replaced.

The Green Party of Quebec believes that Quebec should immediately move toward an ecosocialist society where no one is left out. People with disabilities should not have to worry about how they will pay for their housing, transportation fares or meals.

Quebec has all the necessary means to take care of its people. Together we will get there.

Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Quebec
