It’s great to hear that Toyota has divested from the Matamec Rare Earth project in Abitibi-Temiscamingue.
With the withdrawal of Toyota’s investment the finances of Matamec Explorations inc are very fragile. Today their stock was trading at 1/4 of what it was a few months ago.
It is vital to continue to oppose rare earth mining in Quebec. Even though this decision from Toyota is good news, it is still possible that new investors will come forward.
If the project goes forward, nothing guarantees that Toyota will not purchase the unethical minerals mined on the Matamec site.
Toyota should take this opportunity to publish a comprehensive plan on how they plan to ethically extract the rare earth elements required for use in their hybrid and electric vehicles.
