I would like to take this moment to offer my sincere condolences to all those involved in the attack on Charlie Hebdo this morning.
The work and freedom of journalists are essential pillars of all societies that aspire to be free and democratic. This morning’s events are unfortunately another act of violence perpetuated against freedom of expression among many others that occupy the media airwaves on a « daily » basis.
Too many journalists find themselves targeted by extremist groups who disagree with their content, as was the case this morning. Let us not forget that they are also the target of extremely powerful governments and private interests.
Let us take a moment to commemorate the victims of today’s attack, let us take a moment to remember all the journalists who are imprisoned, all those who are fighting hard to defend freedom of opinion, tolerance and truth in a world where these are increasingly rare!
