Following the spill of 28,000 litres of diesel fuel into the St. Lawrence River in Longueuil, the Green Party of Quebec (PVQ) is asking the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change to increase the penal provisions of the Environment Quality Act and to impose a severe fine on the city of Longueuil.
“The oil spill in Longueuil this week is unacceptable. The Green Party of Quebec is calling on the Quebec government to impose a $2.8 million fine for the 28,000 litre oil spill. This amount represents $100 per litre of diesel spilled into our drinking water. “proclaimed GPQ leader Alex Tyrrell.
“Businesses, municipalities and individuals are rarely exposed to fines for spills, and the time has come to send a clear message; if you contaminate our soil, air or drinking water, you will be held accountable for your actions,” added Catherine Lovatt-Smith, GPQ Deputy Leader and resident of the City of Longueuil.
