Alex Tyrrell Denounces Couillard Governments Planed Tax Cuts During Period of Austerity

Last Sunday, Philippe Couillard’s discourse with respect to the economy took a new turn. The Prime Minister now expects Quebec to generate surplus funds beyond what was initially planned, thanks to the austerity measures included in the controversial Budget 2015.

We can therefore expect further cuts from the government to achieve their objectives. What is the purpose of these austerity measures that will generate surplus funds? Couillard plans to use them to « lower taxes so that people have more money in their pockets ».

We can assume, through this government’s ongoing attacks on social services, the middle class and people living in poverty, that the beneficiaries of these tax cuts will be the rich and big business.

The people of Quebec should not take lightly the debate on austerity that is being heard at this time. The destruction of the machinery of government that we are currently witnessing will have disastrous consequences for the quality of life of each and every one of us. Whether it is the quality of our education, the lack of health services or poverty, we will all be affected by austerity.
