The death of Matthieu Lévesque raises many questions about our mental health system and the use of lethal force by police officers.
According to Matthieu’s mother, the police waited « a quarter of a second » before opening fire on the young man who was armed with a knife.
The case is reminiscent of the case of Sammy Yatim who was shot and killed by Toronto police in 2013. In that case, the police officer involved was charged with murder following the independent investigation.
In the case of Matthieu Lévesque, the Sûreté du Québec is responsible for the investigation.
The Lévesque family and the entire population deserve an explanation.
