Today I wrote an open letter to the Lester B. Pearson School Board commissioners asking them to reconsider their decision to close schools in Verdun LaSalle, Pierrefonds and Lachine.

Please show your support by liking the Facebook page of Save Lakeside, a community group dedicated to opposing the closure of Lakeside High School in Lachine.

At a time when enrolment in English schools is declining the LBPSB should be taking steps to improve french language courses in it’s schools so that graduates are able to function in modern Quebec society.

There is no sense in giving in to misguided Liberal austerity measures without putting up a fight to protect public education and English schools.

Congratulations to all community members who stood together to Save LakesideSave Riverview, Orchard and Thorndale schools!

Although this battle has been won (temporarily) the disastrous effects of austerity continue to be felt accros all services provided by the provincial government.

In the current context of provincial politics, all public services are under threat. This includes access to basic services such as healthcare and education which are both undergoing extensive cuts that are already having an impact on front line services.

What took place at the LBPSB should be viewed as an example of what can happen when community members work together to fight austerity and to protect community institutions from unfair and unnecessary government cutbacks.

In solidarity,

Alex Tyrrell
