Excellent presentation at Concordia this evening by members of the Elsipogtog Mi’kMaq first nation.

In 2013 members of the Mi’kMaq nation successfully put an end to hydraulic fracturing in New Brunswick after months of direct action, roadblocks and pressure tactics. They were brutalized by members of the RCMP on several occasions. Pregnant women were arrested, rights were violated and many people were injured. Fracking trucks attempted to carry out seismic testing under heavy police escort while the conservative premier David Alward refused to negotiate with the protesters.

These protests were the first of their kind with respect to fracking in Canada. They brought together indigenous and non indigenous environmentalists and demonstrated that when people stand together, powerful industries can be stopped in their tracks.

Solidarity with the Mi’kMaq First Nation and all those who participated and supported these protests.
