Today marks three years since I was first elected as the leader of the Green Party of Québec!
I would like to begin by offering a sincere thank you to each and every person who has helped the organization progress over the last few years. Throughout this period, the Green Party of Québec has made tremendous progress and has risen to new heights on the Québec political scene. None of this would have been possible without your support.
On a personal level, holding this position for the last three years has been a deeply humbling, challenging and enriching experience. I am profoundly grateful to the members of our party that have continued to support our common values and my leadership each and every step of the way.
Together, we have built this party from the ground up following years of toxic division and infighting. Together we have been able to draw attention to many important issues that are simply not being addressed by the big three parties in Québec politics. Together, we have successfully modernized, united and built the party into a progressive, eco-socialist, feminist and multicultural organization while clearly defining ourselves on the left of the political spectrum. Together, we have developed a comprehensive program with positions on all of the major issues in Québec politics and by doing so have shattered the idea that the Green Party of Québec is a one issue party.
At a time when the pace of global climate change is ever increasing, the prosperity gap is widening and governments around the world are making catastrophic ecological sacrifices in exchange for short term economic gains and favours from special interest groups, Green Party voices are becoming increasingly important and influential.
Being elected to serve a as leader of our party at age 25 placed a great deal of responsibility on my shoulders. Especially given the magnitude of the environmental and social problems that we are faced with in Quebec society. Although some moments have been difficult, I believe very strongly in our shared values, in our mission, in our power to influence the political debate and in our ability to achieve meaningful changes both in Quebec society and around the world.
One of the most inspiring things that I have observed since being elected as leader is the unquestionable fact that the common values we share in the Green Party of Quebec are becoming more and more popular with the mainstream population both here at home and around the world. One only needs to look South of the border where progressive candidates like Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein have obtained a tremendous amount of support while advocating for ambitious platforms and values that share so much in common with what our organization stands for.
Going forward, the Green Party of Québec will continue speaking out on important issues and influencing the debate as we prepare for the 2018 Québec election campaign. To all those who are interested in getting involved, running in the 2018 election, learning more about our party or offering suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me. The doors of the organization are open and we would love to hear from you or to have you onboard.
Once again, thank you so much to everyone who has supported us so far. I know that we are going to achieve great things together.
The future is Green.
In solidarity,
Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Québec
