– Trump, Trudeau and the Keystone XL Pipeline –

As many of you know, Donald Trump just signed an executive order to speedup approval and construction of the Keystone XL pipeline project.

How should we react to this news?

During the 2015 federal election campaign, Justin Trudeau made it clear that he is a strong supporter of the Keystone XL pipeline and we could very well see him taking selfies with Trump over a backdrop of toxic talilings ponds.

What’s the difference?

It’s in the way they explain their positions. Trump has flat out denied that climate change exists. Trudeau, on the other hand, has acknowledged that climate change exists but nevertheless refuses to take any kind of meaningful action to correct the problem. He could not care less about the ecological impacts of the tar sands and has made this clear to big oil, the Alberta government and their special interest groups.

Fundamentally, these two leaders agree more than they disagree on these issues and the continuation of state sponsored fossil fuel extraction. On the positive side, Donald Trump’s presence in the white house will serve to mobilize the progressive environmental movement and will bring these issues into the mainstream. His election represents a massive call to action for the progressive environmental movement.

Let’s seize the opportunity Trump has presented us with and work vigorously to hold both Trump and Trudeau administrations to account on Climate.

In solidarity,

Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Québec
