Today I am launching a petition with Green Party of Canada members from coast to coast calling on Elizabeth May to take a clear position against the Alberta Tar Sands.
Continuing Tar Sands extraction until the year 2050 and beyond will contribute significantly to global warming while destroying the Boreal forest, putting human health at risk and trampling indigenous rights.
We simply cannot allow the Green Party of Canada to continue supporting bitumen extraction. We need to show leadership. The goal of our petition is to have Elizabeth May commit to shutting down the tar sands within the first mandate of a Green Party majority government.
I encourage all Green Party Members, Candidates, Provincial Leaders and environmentalists to sign our petition. With your support we will succeed in having this important policy changed once and for all.
This petition should not be considered as an attack on Elizabeth May. We disagree with her policy on this issue and are speaking out in order to get this policy changed before the 2019 election in order to ensure that the Green Party of Canada stays at the forefront of the environmental movement.
In solidarity,
Alex Tyrrell
Leader of the Green Party of Quebec
