Before leaving Alberta I would like to express my solidarity with the Albertan LGBTQ+ community who have been the target of attacks from social conservatives, Jason Kenney and the United Conservative Party.
Alberta’s bill 8 would roll back protections for Gay Straight Alliances in schools. It would make it legal for principles to inform parents that their children have expressed an interest in joining a GSA while simultaneously allowing the schools to indefinitely delay establishing the groups.
GSA groups are designed to help LGBTQ+ children flourish in school environments that can otherwise be very hostile to sexual minorities. They prevent bullying, suicide, and discrimination not only within the schools but within the general population once the students graduate.
There are also plans to roll back the ban on conversion therapy.
Progressives across Canada need to voice their solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Alberta and their allies so that Jason Kenney will not be able to go forward with his hateful and discriminatory bill that will leave LGBTQ+ children vulnerable in their own schools, families and communities.
