– Legault is breaking his promise on electoral reform –
Those who have been following me for some time know that since 2014, we have worked very hard to build a consensus on the need to reform the voting system.
This led to the signing of an agreement on May 9 between myself, François Legault, and the leaders of both the PQ and QS.
We have all made a commitment to implement a proportional voting system in Quebec if one of our parties were to take power following the 2018 general election.
During the election campaign, Legault literally pledged not to do as Justin Trudeau did, and he also abandoned his promise.
But today, Legault is following in Trudeau’s footsteps by abandoning his promise. The CAQ proposes to postpone the reform to another electoral cycle and, even worse, to hold a referendum on the issue. To quote him before the elections: “I think that an election campaign is enough to have the legitimacy to change the voting system. Voters] will vote on October 1.”
His commitment was clear before the elections. He was firm on the idea of establishing a proportional electoral system in collaboration with the parties that signed the agreement.
Not only did he refuse to meet with us after the election, but he is reneging on his commitment and backing down on the issue.
