On Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 12:00 pm, Alex Tyrrell, leader of the Green Party of Quebec, in the presence of Halimatou Bah, deputy leader of the Green Party of Quebec, went in front of the Longueuil wastewater treatment plant, the Centre d’épuration Rive-Sud, in Longueuil, near the riding of Marie-Victorin where he is running as a candidate. He has been demonstrating to demand massive investments and changes in the Longueuil wastewater treatment plant, and he is also coming to recommend similar changes throughout the province of Quebec.
Alex Tyrrell is an eco-socialist activist who was elected leader of the Quebec Green Party in 2013 at the age of 25. He holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science degree from Concordia University as well as a college diploma from Dawson College in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Under his leadership, the Green Party of Quebec has positioned itself on the left of the Quebec political scene, while adopting a comprehensive program for Quebec, the new Green Plan, which contains progressive proposals on all issues of Quebec politics.
The leader of the Green Party of Quebec said: “Across Quebec, provincial, local and federal governments have turned a blind eye to wastewater treatment. In 2020, there were 53,000 untreated wastewater discharges into the environment. 81 municipalities in the province have no sewage treatment and are continuously discharging wastewater into the environment. This is happening all over Quebec right now. The stakes are high and require massive, multi-generational investments. The poor state of our water treatment facilities and collection systems represents a massive environmental debt that we must address before the environment suffers further damage.”
Halimatou Bah then confirmed the party leader’s words, “Equipping ourselves with modern wastewater treatment infrastructure is essential to ensure the well-being of the population and future generations. It is imperative to invest in green infrastructure to avoid the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment.”
The Green Party leader emphasized the importance of the energy transition in Quebec: “Our plan for a rapid energy and infrastructure transition will cost hundreds of billions of dollars, put hundreds of thousands of people to work, and move us away from the current economic model that is based on fossil fuels, private vehicles, and over-consumption. Let’s phase out the fossil fuel, auto and arms industries and put people to work on green infrastructure. The Green Party of Quebec is the only party that advocates this kind of massive investment.”
Alex Tyrrell concluded by reiterating the importance of voting for the Green Party of Quebec: “A vote for the Green Party is a vote for energy transition, green infrastructure and massive investments on an intergenerational scale. We need your support. The environment needs your support. Vote Green in the next election, we would be honored to have your support.”
