“Quebec Green Party leader Alex Tyrrell is calling for greater environmental oversight of heavy metal emissions from the Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda.
Alex Tyrrell argues that the smelter should be shut down altogether if it fails to meet environmental standards for air pollution. “The smelter has had these pollution problems for almost 40 years. Processing copper should not be done on the backs of citizens, who have an increased risk of developing cancer,” he revealed. Alex Tyrrell believes that the company should be much more transparent in the matter and the government, more severe. “It’s true that recycling metals is important for the environment, but we can’t justify pollution that spreads for dozens of kilometers around,” added the Green Party leader.”
