Green Leadership Candidate Alex Tyrrell to Denounce Big Money in Politics
Last week, the Green Party of Canada announced that candidates will have to raise $50k in order to participate in the leadership race. This fee is higher than the NDP, the Parti Quebecois and the Quebec Liberal Party are charging for access to their leadership races.
Alex Tyrrell, the 31-year-old leader of the Green Party of Quebec who is running on an ecosocialist platform and who is known for campaigning in a nearly twenty-year-old Honda civic while camping at rest stops and staying in youth hostels has denounced the entrance fee stating that the party’s establishment has « Put the party up for sale » while calling into question his candidacy in the race. New Brunswick provincial Green MLA Kevin Arsenault recently called the entrance fee “classist” in a message posted to Twitter.
Wednesday February 12th at noon in Square Victoria (in front of the Montreal Stock Exchange and on the site of the Occupy protests and encampment) Alex Tyrrell will make an important announcement about the future of his leadership campaign while denouncing the role of big money in politics. A live video of his declaration will be posted on his Facebook profile.
Public financing of federal political parties was abolished in 2011 by the Harper government. The consequences on the Green Party have been catastrophic. The party has gone from having a $1k entrance fee and $50k spending limit in the 2006 leadership race in which Elizabeth May was elected to having a $50k entrance fee and $500k spending limit in the 2020 race.
